Ranked Choice Voting is a method of voting where instead of choosing just one candidate, voters rank candidates in order of preference. If a single candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, then they are declared the winner.
However, if no candidate receives a majority, an automated instant runoff is initiated and the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed behind the scenes based on the voters’ second choices.
If those voters did not specify a second choice, their votes are thrown out.
This process continues until one candidate has a majority of the remaining votes and is declared the winner. After the initial ballot is cast, the voter has no input in the process, regardless of how many instant runoff rounds occur. There is no concept of a traditional runoff election where voters can make new choices based on the new field of top candidates.
Proponents claim Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to express their preferences for multiple candidates and ensures that the ultimate winner is the candidate with the most overall support rather than just the one with the most first-choice votes. While this may sound nice in theory, in practice, it’s a scheme allowing candidates with a minority of voter support to win through mathematical technicalities.
Ranked Choice Voting is Bad News!
Advocates are pushing Ranked-Choice Voting at nearly every local and state level. Why? Proponents claim that Ranked-Choice Voting allows voters to express their preferences for multiple candidates and ensures that the ultimate winner is the candidate with the most overall support rather than just the one with the most first-choice votes. While this may sound nice in theory, in practice, it’s a scheme allowing candidates with a minority of voter support to win through mathematical technicalities.
Here’s what you need to know about how Ranked-Choice Voting really works and the dangers it brings.
No thanks...
”…the messages I received loud and clear from the people of Sandy was ‘Ranked Choice Voting? No thanks.’”
Monica Zoltanski
Mayor, Sandy, Utah
Tossed votes...
“58 percent of ballots were either discarded or spoiled in 2021’s Genola City Council Race, often because those voters failed to rank a second choice, according to the Election Transparency Initiative.”
Second place winners...
“In 2018, incumbent Rep. Bruce Poliquin (R-ME) lost to Democrat Jared Golden despite initially winning a plurality of first-place votes.”
Jason Snead

Subversion of voter intent...
“The process subverts the will of voters by helping push out insurgent candidates who have majority support from their party’s voters for establishment-backed contenders who can’t win outright.”

Why Oppose Ranked Choice Voting?
The Committee to Support and Defend is the only voice promoting the Constitional conservative issues impacting servicemembers and veterans.
We connect veterans with activities that allow them to continue to support and defend their Constitution.
Military votes are often at risk due to deployment logistics, lack of communication about voting procedures and absentee ballot deadlines. The Committee to Support and Defend works to ensure that every military vote is counted.
CSD involves military spouses in the electoral process, which can include connecting spouses of active duty service members with temporary employment.
The Committee to Support and Defend sponsors regular, complimentary webinar events. These web gatherings offer educational content on current issues and threats to our republic combined with recommended actions for concerned citizens.
CSD hosts events nationwide which offer members the opportunity to meet public figures, interact with other CSD members and introduce others to this growing family of conservative patriots who are working together to support and defend America.
The Committee to Support and Defend opposes the expansion of Socialism and Marxism happening in America today. It is important we fight the threat from China and reverse this hard left turn that endangers our citizens and the future of this great nation.
The Committee to Support and Defend is dedicated to the full defense of the Second Amendment without equivocation or conditions.
The founding fathers understood the importance of armed citizens, which is why they prioritized the Second Amendment. The Committee to Support and Defend is committed to preserving the right to keep and bear arms and will fight any effort to reduce this important liberty. Today, one of the greatest threats to gun owners is the establishment of Red Flag laws that endanger all Americans, these proposed laws target and endanger the liberty of our military and veterans.
CSD believes the perforation of our southern border is one of America’s greatest national security threats. The current administration’s position on open borders and illegal immigrants places our nation at risk from a health, economic and safety perspective. Our southern border has become a lifeline for terrorists, drug cartels and human traffickers. As a sovereign nation, we have a right and a duty to protect our borders.
Energy is the lifeblood of the American economy. Our lack of energy independence means we are forced to purchase oil from our adversaries, and, in many cases, our money ends up in the hands of terrorists.
U.S. military readiness and our economy depend on energy. It is in America’s best interest to reopen the Keystone Pipeline and focus on protecting the national security interests provided by energy independence.
The American people should not tolerate the bureaucratic abuses that lead to the government oppressing our freedom — such as oppressive lockdowns, mandates and intrusions on personal liberty.
The gold standard in voting, recognized throughout the world, is for citizens to cast their vote in person, with identification. Today we watch as politicians call these voting practices “racist.” CSD rejects efforts to end common sense voting measures. Additionally, CSD is working with its partners, Protect Military Votes and the American Constitutional Rights Union, to ensure active duty service members have clear instructions on how they can execute their own constitutional right to vote.
The past two decades have shown a dramatic increase in censorship of written and verbal expression in America. The complicit arrangement between private corporations and government to present a single view is an assault on our constitutional rights. The Committee to Support and Defend is committed to providing a platform and a voice to points of view that differ from those which cancel culture proponents approve.
The dismantling of the rule of law in our great country will lead to dangerous situations for citizens and law enforcement. CSD supports law enforcement and strong penalties for criminals. The Committee opposes a revolving door for criminals and a two-tiered justice system that offers up different penalties based on the viewpoints of the accused. The disregard and disrespect for law enforcement and our nation’s rule of law must end.
The politicization and ideological purging of our military is corrosive to U.S. national security. The focus of our military should be on training, readiness, and defense of our Nation, not leftist cultural “wokeness”.
We believe the hard left turn toward Socialism and Marxism endangers our citizens and the future of this great nation.
